What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll be using Perplexity to compress hours of vendor research, competitive analysis, and market benchmarking into 15–30 minutes — with cited sources you can link in your business case or recommendation memo. Unlike ChatGPT, Perplexity searches the live web and cites every claim.
What you'll need
What you should see: The Perplexity search interface with a large search/chat box in the center.
In the search box, type a specific research question — not a keyword search. The more specific, the better:
"Compare Salesforce Sales Cloud vs. HubSpot CRM for a mid-size financial services company with 200 sales reps. Include: pricing, key features, integration capabilities, and pros/cons as of 2025."
Press Enter or click the search icon.
What you should see: A detailed answer with footnote numbers ([1], [2], [3]) linked to source URLs in a sidebar. This is what makes Perplexity different — every fact is attributed.
Click the "Ask follow-up" box (appears below the answer) and dig deeper:
"What are the most common complaints about Salesforce from companies in financial services?" "What does Salesforce charge for API access and how does that affect total cost of ownership?"
The follow-up maintains context from the original search.
Click the Focus dropdown (appears as a filter icon or dropdown menu) and select:
Using Reddit focus for vendor research: Type "Salesforce complaints financial services" with Reddit focus to get unfiltered user experiences — often more honest than formal reviews.
Click any source link in the sidebar to verify the original article. When writing your business case:
Vendor comparison for RFP support:
Compare [Vendor A] and [Vendor B] for [use case]. Include: pricing, key features, integration capabilities, market share, and typical customer profile as of 2025.
